PBA to implement new rules

The Manila Times
October 6, 2007

The Philippine Basketball Association will adopt at least three areas in the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) rules in an effort to make the games faster with the end in view of attracting more fans to watch them in the coming Philippine Cup of its 33rd season.

Interim commissioner Sonny Barrios said the board of governors has approved shortening the distance for the three-point shot from 22 feet to 20 + feet, which the pro-league had been observing since it was introduced.

Barrios, who graced Friday's session of the SCOOP Forum at the Kamayan Restaurant with chair Tony Chua, also disclosed that the rectangular straight lines marking the free throw line has also been changed to the shape of a triangle in conformity with the amateur rules.

"Hand-check will be allowed starting with the All-Filipino provided the defensive player will not impede the movement of the offensive player," explained Barrios, adding that the implementation of the new rules, besides making the games faster and appreciated by the fans, is aimed at preparing for the international competitions the PBA is committed to lend its players to.

Barrios said that as far as the hand-check rule is concerned, the Commissioner's office will allow the referees to exercise more leeway deciding whether it is foul or not, quickly adding though that game officials will be prepared to handle every situation.

"This is one area where misjudgment on the part of the officiating can give me big headache. But I'm sure they can adjust to it," he said.

Chua, meanwhile, confirmed that the season opening will be held at the Araneta Coliseum as scheduled, adding that more games will be played at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City as the Quezon City Big dome is usually full-booked during Christmas season.
