In January 1998, the Philippine Basketball Association has recognized the All-Time Mythical Five of Philippine Basketball: Carlos Loyzaga, Narciso Bernardo, Robert Jaworski, Hector Calma and Alvin Patrimonio representing five decades of Philippine basketball. Loyzaga was cited for his exploits in the 1950s, Bernardo in the 1960s, Jaworski in the 1970s, Calma in the 1980s and Patrimonio in the 1990s.

Read More......Jaworski was the Oldest Professional Basketball Player
In 1998, Robert "Sonny" Jaworski was considered the oldest professional basketball player in the world. At 52, he was still donning his No. 7 jersey for Barangay Ginebra, probably the most popular team in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). In that year, he played alongside his son Dudut Jaworski for the same team, much to the excitement of the crowd. No other professional player in the world his age has played competitive basketball. In the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers' Kareem Abdul-Jabbar retired at 45. Most professional basketball players retire from the league before they are 35. Jaworski, on the other hand, was still playing at least 30 minutes a ball game in his 40s. In 1986, he set the record for playing the most number of minutes in a game, 58, in a Ginebra versus Manila Beer encounter, when he was 40 years old. He is the only player who has played in the PBA from the league's birth in 1975 up to the league's 25th year.
As a player, he won the Most Valuable Player in 1978 while playing for the fabled Toyota Corolla. He is listed as one of the PBA's 25 all-time greatest players and was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the league.
Jaworski retired from the PBA in 1998 just before he assumed his new post as a senator of the Republic. He had served three decades of his life as a basketball player.
Carlos "The Big Difference" Loyzaga
There was something in common in the country's third place finish in the 1954 World Basketball championship, its four consecutive gold medals in the Asian Games from 1951 to 1962, and its good performance in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and 1960 Rome Olympics. The common thing was Carlos Loyzaga, who was ironically dubbed as the "Big Difference" of Philippine basketball.
A two-time Olympian, Loyzaga, the team captain, was responsible for steering the fabled Philippine team to third place finish in the World Basketball Championship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on November 5, 1954. He was named to the Mythical Selection for his sterling performance because he was the third best individual scorer in the world event. The Philippines beat Uruguay, 67-63 to win the third place. The title was won by the United States against Brazil.
Loyzaga was the first basketball player to be inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame.
Basketball team wins and loses the same game
Can a basketball team win and lose the same game?
The question may appear befuddling, but that was exactly what happened to the United States basketball team which participated in the 1972 Munich Games. The team defeated the Soviet Union in the battle for the gold, but the outcome was set aside and the Soviets were given ball possession. The opposing team made good a helluva shot to win the controversy-marred game. The atmosphere in the Munich Olympics was tense. On the morning of September 5, 1972, 11 members of the Israeli team were gunned down by terrorists. It was uncertain if the game would continue, but they did, in the hope that the purity of athletic competition would return a sense of normalcy to the Olympic venues.
In the finals of the basketball competition, the United States was pitted against the Soviet Union. Organizers felt a matchup between the two superpowers was the perfect healing event. Here was a Cold War which will be waged in a hardcourt without the need to spill blood. The game turned out to be a classic, airight, but mostly because of the disturbing conclusion and blatant injustice that helped the Soviets upset the US, 51-50. In this game, fair play was thrown in the garbage can.
"Im not angry about it now, but I was for a long time," said Jim Brewer, a forward on the losing U.S. team. “It’s something I try not to think about, but I remember whenever the Olympics come along.” Entering the championship game with the Soviets, the United States’ record in Olympic hoops was an incredible 62-0! Led by a collection of future NBA pros that included Brewer, Doug Collins, Bobby Jones, Tom Burleson and Tom McMillen, the Stars and Stripes squad was the top pick to win its eight straight Olympic gold medal. But the Soviets had a game plan and stuck to it religiously. Playing a tenacious defense, the Soviets jumped out to a 26-21 lead at halftime, and led by eight points with 6:07 remaining in the game. Sensing trouble, the Americans made a desperate run, but with only six seconds left, the Soviets had the ball, a 49-48 advantage, and the gold medals practically secured around their necks. Collins intercepted a cross-court pass, drove toward the basket, and knocked out violently by a swarm of defenders. Though dazed, Collins sank both free throws to give the U.S. the lead for the first time, 50-49.
“I was actually knocked out for a few seconds,” recounted Collins. “I still didn’t have my composure when I was on the line. That’s probably why I made the shots.” The confusion that followed was too difficult to comprehend. As the second foul shot left Collins hand, the Soviet team called a timeout — even though international rules at the time dictated that a timeout cannot be called until the ball was inbounded after scoring a basket. When no timeout was granted, the Soviet bench ran onto the court to protest, thus forcing an automatic stoppage of the clock with one second left. When the Soviets were instructed to inbound the ball, their long pass downcourt was batted away, and the American players embraced each other on ecstacy. They believed the game had ended and that they had won the gold medal. But lo and behold, R. William Jones, the secretary-general of the International Amateur Basketball Federation, came out of the stands and though bereft with jurisdiction, overruled the officials and granted the Soviet Union’s request for a time-out.
Jones’ unwarranted interference put three seconds back on the clock. As the Soviets prepared to inbound the ball, Brazilian referee Renato Righetto ordered McMillan to give passer Ivan Yedeshko room, even though no such international rule existed. McMillen backed off, and Yedeshko hurled a long pass which landed on the hands of Aleksander Belov. Belov outmaneuvered two defenders and scored at the buzzer to give the Soviets an unbelievable 51-50 victory.
The U.S. team protested the outcome to FIBA’s Jury of Appeals. But the team’s protest was rejected via a 3-2 vote. Unperturbed, the American players held a vote of their own. They decided unanimously not to accept their silver medals. “A silver medal is quite honorable if it’s the one you’re supposed to get,’ said Brewer. “It would be shameful to receive it that way.” The US team was chided for falling into complacency. While the resuit of the game was dubious, there was no denying that the US had to play catch-up right from the opening basket. “You have to look at how the team was coached,” said Bobby Jones. “We were very quick, but (head coach) Hank Iba stressed defense and a slowdown game. The Russians had played together three or four years, and we were together three or four months, so anything we could have done off a fastbreak would have been to our advantage. But if I could change one thing, I would urge our players not to go out and play those last three seconds.”
The Soviet Union’s victory in the 1972 Munich Olympics was one of the biggest upsets in basketball. Almost 23 years since the unexpected loss of the United States, the silver medals the American players were supposed to receive has remained unclaimed in a vault in Switzerland. “Despite what happened,” says Jones, “we never felt sorry for ourselves. After the Israeli massacre, I even said, ‘Why are we laying?”
A Woeful Basketball Performance
In the 1948 Olympic Games, Iraq took part in basketball with the hope of being competitive. Unfortunately, that expectation was never realized. Early in the competition, Iraq was bombed by Korea to the tune of 120-20, a margin of 100 points!
Unbelievable, huh? Well, three nights later, the Iraqis took on China. They duplicated their previous dubious performance by losing, 125-25. At least they got more offense in their second game.
1936 Olympic Basketball Rules
In the basketball tournament at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, both teams had to jump ball at center court after every shot was made. This rule was an obvious ad vantage for the taller team which always got the ball after a jump ball. Players must also have the endurance of an iron man because there were also no timeouts allowed during a game. Substitution was allowed buta player taken out of the game was not permitted to come back again for the rest of the match. These rules made the games more punishing as matches were held outdoors in a tennis court made of sand and clay.

Ramon Fernandez, one of only two 4-time Most Valuable Player in the PBA, had his best season in 1984 following the disbandment of his original team Toyota. The 6-4 center missed a triple-double average for the whole season by just five assists! His averages in 40.80 minutes per game of action in 64 outings as franchise player of rookie team Beer Hausen were: 27.7 points, 11.17 rebounds and 9.92 assists. Fernandez also had 1.53 steals and 2.09 blocks in his year-long all-around brilliance. Fernandez powered Beer Hausen to a fourth place finish in the first conference (All-Filipino 1), runner-up in the second conference (All-Filipino 2) and third place in the third conference (Invitational). He won the second of his four MVP trophies in that season. Fernandez is the one of the PBA’s all-time leader in most points scored, most minutes played, most defensive rebounds, most total rebounds, most steals and most blocked shots.

Standing 6 feet flat, Heater was a senior at Burnsville High School and was looking to end his stint in the school with aplomb to earn a college scholarship. His teammates willingly obliged as they handed the ball, Heater repeatedly for him to look impressive in their game against Waden High.
In the first few minutes of the game, Heater appeared reluctant to shoot the ball. “I didn’t go along with the plan because we’ve always been taught team ball,” Heater explained.
Heater’s coach called a time out and gave the former a dressing down. Heater got the message and in the ensuing play, he started showing his real worth. Heater started scorching hot and buried one shot after another.
In the first 16 minutes of the game, he had posted an unbelievable 50 points to help Burnsville to a 75-17 lead at halftime. Heater was not yet finished with his scoring spree. In the opening minutes of the second half, he broke the then-West Virginia scoring record of 74 points. “After I broke it, I wanted to come out,” said Heater. But Heater’s coach kept him in the game. And Danny remained hot.
In the game’s final 10 minutes, he scored an amazing 55 points to bring his overall scoring mark to 135 points! Heater made 53 of 70 shots and also sank 29 of 41 free throwsen route to scoring 135 points — a US record! Incidentally, Burnsville massacred Waden High to the tune of 173-43.
“It was so unreal,” said Heater of his fantastic game. “It was a one-in-a- lifetime game. I don’t know how I did it!” Heater was offered a scholarship at the University of Richmond, but he never got to finish his first year. He incurred a back injury in a vehicular accident and, after his parents’ house was burned to ashes, he left school.
Heater became an airline ticket agent in Washington, D.C. Although his basketball career had ended abruptly, Heater’s scoring rampage in that game against Waden High remains vividly etched in his memory bank. “I still get the clippings out once in a while,” he said. “I think about it most during the basketball season.”
