Norwood brings act to PBL

People's Journal
October 23, 2007

Games Today
(EAC gym, Manila)
2 p.m. -- Harbour Centre vs RP Team
4 p.m. -- Hapee Toothpaste vs Mail & More

TODAY IS going to be a double delight for PBL fans.

That’s because Hapee Toothpaste’s Fil-Am Gabe Norwood will be bringing his act to the league, while the Philippine team shows how far it has improved since its formation last month when it battles a team raring to gain a piece of history.

First, the SEA Games-bound RP team tests the mettle of four-peat seeking Harbour Centre in the kick-off of another explosive double-header in the 2008 PBL V-Go Extreme Energy Drink Cup at the Emilio Aguinaldo College gym in Manila.

The RP team, led by the league back-to-back MVP Jason Castro and do-it-all forward Jervy Cruz, battles the Batang Pier at 2 p.m. with both teams going for the early bragging rights.

Though the Philippine team is also funded by Harbour Centre owner Mikee Romero, the battle between the Nationals and Batang Pier is expected to be exciting and bruising.

“Whoever is the fittest shall prevail. Matira ang matibay,” said Erick Arejola, Romero’s special assistant to both teams. “Both teams want to prove something so it’s going to be worth watching.”

With Castro, Beau Belga, Boyet Bautista, Chad Alonzo, Jonathan Fernandez and Erick dela Cuesta on loan to the RP team, Harbour Centre is expected to lean heavily on La Salle’s TY Tang, Rico Maierhofer, Jervy Gago, National University’s Edwin Asoro and Fil-Am Mercado Solomon.

Capping a hectic Tuesday afternoon trip is the duel between Hapee Toothpaste and comebacking Mail & More at 4 p.m. in the league co-presented by Xtreme Magic Sing and supported by Gerry’s Grill, ACCEL, LED multi-display, Suzuki Motors, Spalding and Gold’s Gym.

For sure, the limelight will be on the wiry but athletic Mason alumnus, who a couple of years back brought so much pride to the Filipino community in the United States when he starred for the George Mason University in the NCAA Final Four.

“I’m quite excited to play in the PBL,” said the 6-foot-5 Norwood, who played for the all-pro Philippine Team in the recent FIBA-Asian Championship in Japan. “I’ll do everything to help Hapee win games.”

Hapee team manager Bernard Yang, however, cautioned Hapee supporters not to expect too much for their ace player at this early, saying: “There’s no doubt about his athleticism and talent but this is a team sport. He needs time to adjust to our system.”
