Matt Schmechtig

6-1 Guard
Perth, Western Australia

My name is Matt Schmechtig and I am 21 years of age. I am from Perth, Western Australia. I have been playing basketball ever since I can remember. I have always wanted to come to the United States to get an education and, most of all, play basketball. After I completed my high school diploma in Australia I decided it was time to see if I could go to the United States with the ambition to play basketball. I got in touch with the Head Men’s Basketball Coach here at Jamestown Community College and sent a personal information package to him. After conversing with the coach for awhile I was offered an athletic scholarship which has enabled me to spend the last two years here in Jamestown, New York. Jamestown Community College was a great place to start for me because the education system is so well set-up. The professors really care about me as a person and are very willing to help me out at anytime. It was a bit of a cultural difference but the people around me helped me settle right in and made me feel really comfortable. There are a lot of things to do around Jamestown which has kept me busy when I am not playing basketball or studying.

I am now finishing off my last semester here at Jamestown Community College and will be graduating with a degree. I am also fortunate enough to be getting recruited to play basketball at four year schools. My goal is to play professional basketball in Australia, Europe or the Philippines one day and Jamestown Community College has definitely helped me move towards realizing that goal.
