Filipinos playing ball overseas
I have compiled below a list of Filipinos (and Filipinos with foreign blood) who are currently displaying their wares abroad. Some of them are already here and in fact are playing in the PBL. Some of them are still studying abroad and may go directly to the PBA next year or take a chance in the PBL.
Stephens’ teammate at Holy Names University who is described as a pure point guard… he’s a Two time California Pacific Conference First team Performer… broke both, the single game assist record (15) and the single season assist record (236)… he is also #2 all-time on the program’s career assist and steals list with 550 and 269 respectively. He ended the 05-06 season averaging 8.3 points per game and 7.5 assist per game.
Born April 3, 1983 in San Diego, California… starred for Chaminade University… previous to that, he played two years for Cuyumaca College… as a sophomore, he averaged 17.8 points per contest while shooting 37% from three, along with 3.6 rebounds per contest… He was a First Team Pacific Coast Conference selection… as a freshman, he averaged 11 points to go along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists per game… he’s a very big guard with a deadly jumper from behind the arc.
Born on January 9, 1985 in Whittier, California to parents Ephraim and Kathy Dalafu… starred for Vanguard University… a combo guard who has a great knowledge and understanding of the game… described as a polished shooter who hit 44 of 96 attempts (45%) from the three-point area in 2006… is a career 40% 3-point shooter… an outstanding student-athleter, he has a degree in Business Administration.
Born July 28, 1982 in Montreal, Quebec to parents Nelson and Nenette Dosado… played for American International College, an NCAA Division II school… the best Filipino prospect out of Canada since Dean Labayen and Karlo Villanueva… a strong ballhandler and shooter… tallied a career-high 29 points in a game against Southern Connecticut… An Academic All-American, he finished with a degree in Finance.
There was a lot of fuss when the Colorado State reserve center made his way into the national team training pool. Nobody knew if he had Filipino roots but I guess the coaching staff’s brainthrusts knew something we didn’t know. Described as a lean-framed shotblocker with developing skills. If he continues to improve his game, he will one day supplant Asi Taulava as the RP team’s starting center… backup to NBA rookie Jason Smith at Colorado State… was involved in an off-court conflict with a former teammate.
JOHN EDWIN ESCUETA 6-5 250
Former HS teammate of Ronnie Aguilar back at… Not much information is available on him except that he is reportedly a bruiser and plays the power game.
A former member of the Ateneo junior team, he tried his luck abroad and is currently playing college ball at… completed HS at Desert Christian School… averaged 15pts and 11rbs a game in his senior year, in the process, leading his team to an 20-4 record which is by far the best season in school history… Has a nice low post game but his game is not based on power but finesse. Player comparison is Yancy de Ocampo with better upside… he wants to be a doctor someday but with a pro career beckoning, he may just as well give basketball a try.
Played 2 years for Ateneo in the UAAP before taking his acts to Western Kentucky… emerged as the school’s leader in blocked shots… very, very athletic and has great timing on the blocks… son of Peter Aguilar who is a former PBA player.
Native of Pampanga… could shoot up to seven feet as he is still very young (19 years old)… is currently trying out for a Division II school in the US.
RAY PARKS 6-3 MEMPHIS
Son of 7-time PBA Best Import awardee Bobby Parks.
Brother of Dorian Peña… Incoming junior at Coppin State, the same school that produced his brother and Rafi Reavis… He has been described as having “excellent skills on both ends of the floor and an explosive leaper with a nice shooting touch around the basket.” Born Nov. 6, 1984, in Boston...Major is computer science… averaged 18 points, 12 rebounds and 4.3 blocks per game in his two-year letterwinner at Southern Maryland Christian Academy.
